The 255-hp, V-6 Accord Hybrid in showrooms since early 2005,
offers the same dependability and sophistication as the Accord
non-hybrids. The hybrid powertrain in the 2005 Honda Accord
Hybrid delivers more low-end torque with increased fuel economy
for a powerful, efficient, harmonious ride.
Additional features include aerodynamic 16-inch alloy wheels,
black chrome front grille and rear trunk spoiler. Starting
at $29,990, it received an EPA rating of 30/37 mpg city/highway.
The electric motor-gas engine combo adds up to 255 horsepower
with a 3L V6 engine that moves from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. Compared
to the conventional Accord, the hybrid version will weigh
400 pounds more, be 14 inches longer and offer a 15 horsepower
boost.
The Honda Accord has ranked as the second best-selling car
in the country, behind the Toyota Camry, so Honda has high
expectations of the hybrid version. Early reviews indicate
that Honda has succeeded on performance with the Accord Hybrid.
Honda spokeswoman Sara Pines says the Accord Hybrid will
not compete with buyers of the Toyota Prius or Ford Escape.
If Honda succeeds in reaching their goal of selling 20,000
of the Accord Hybrids, it will be a major help to the environment
as well as our collective gas bill. Honda anticipates selling
over 50,000 hybrids in 2005, with 20,000 being Accords. At
least 30,000 or more will be the Civic Hybrid. Although Honda
announced it was dropping the compact Insight, that hasn't
happened yet. Honda spokesman Chuck Schifsky told the Chicago
Tribune, "We're not dropping the Insight yet. We'll still
build it in 2005 and then decide to continue it, replace it
or drop it from the lineup." After all, the two-door
Honda Insight is still the EPA's long-standing undisputed
king for top fuel economy, at around 70 mpg.
